We offer in-chair whitening completed in a single appointment and custom-fitted take-home trays worn for 1 to 2 weeks. Both use professional-strength whitening gel that only a registered dental practitioner may supply. Whitening lightens natural tooth enamel. It does not change the colour of crowns, veneers or existing fillings, which is one of the things we check before we start.

In-chair whitening, take-home trays and over-the-counter kits compared

Many patients end up using both. In-chair whitening, which the profession also calls chairside whitening, does the work in one appointment, and take-home teeth whitening keeps the result going, because you still have the trays and can use a top-up gel months later without booking another treatment.

Over-the-counter kits are not useless; they simply do a smaller job. They lift the extrinsic stain sitting on the surface of the enamel, at a concentration set for unsupervised use, in a tray that was not made for your mouth, and nobody examines you first for a cavity or an exposed root surface that the gel is about to run into.

What Does Professional Teeth Whitening Cost in Sydney?

There is no single price for teeth whitening because your starting shade, the restorations already in your smile, and whether your teeth need a cleaning first all affect the treatment. As a guide to the market, Sydney dental practices publishing their fees in September 2026 advertise in-chair whitening at roughly $550-$900 and custom take-home kits at roughly $450-$570. Those are other practices’ published prices, not ours.

Here is what moves the number:

In-chair, take-home, or both. A single in-chair appointment, a set of custom trays with gel, or the two combined are three different treatments at three different prices.
The shade you start from. A deeper starting colour takes more applications to shift, and sometimes more than one appointment.
Whether a clean is needed first. Whitening gel works on a clean tooth surface. It does not work through plaque or calculus, so a check-up, scale and clean often comes first.
Restorations in the smile line. Crowns, veneers and composite fillings do not lighten. If yours sit at the front, matching them to the new shade afterwards is a separate cost, and it is the one patients least expect.
Sensitivity management. Some patients need a desensitising course before or after treatment.
Top-up gel. Once you have trays, keeping the results going costs a syringe of gel rather than a new treatment.

How many shades lighter you can expect is not something a price list can tell you. The only accurate whitening quote is one written after we have examined your teeth, because your starting shade and your existing restorations both affect the answer. What Happens at Your Teeth Whitening Appointment

In-chair teeth whitening is done in six stages, and the first two happen before any whitening gel touches your teeth.

Consultation and assessment

We check for decay, cracks, exposed root surfaces and gum health first, because whitening gel applied over an untreated cavity or an inflamed gum is where most of the discomfort people report actually originates. We also record your starting shade against a shade guide, so the change is measured rather than remembered.

A clean if you need one

Whitening works on the surface of the tooth, so surface staining and calculus come off first with a check-up, scale and clean.

Preparation

A barrier is placed to isolate and protect your gums and lips before any gel is applied.

Application

The whitening gel is applied to the front teeth, left for a set period, then removed and reapplied.

Shade check and desensitising

We record the new shade against the same guide you started on, and apply a desensitising agent if your teeth need it.

Trays and aftercare

If you are having take-home whitening as well, we take impressions or a digital scan for your custom trays. We will also tell you what to avoid for the first 48 hours, the window in which teeth pick up new stains most easily. You can read more about the equipment we use.

How Long Does Teeth Whitening Last?

How long your result lasts depends far more on what you do afterwards than on which treatment you chose. Most patients hold their result somewhere between several months and a couple of years, and the difference between the two ends of that range is almost entirely diet, smoking and whether they top up.

Coffee, tea, red wine, soy sauce, curry, dark berries, and smoking all put colour back onto the enamel, so teeth will need topping up more often if those stay part of the diet.

What extends the result is having the trays. A set of custom-fitted trays and a syringe of top-up gel lets you refresh the shade at home for a fraction of the price of a new treatment, which is the practical reason take-home teeth whitening is worth having even if you also whiten in the chair. Regular check-ups and cleans do the rest, because surface stains removed regularly never have the opportunity to set in.

When Teeth Whitening Is Not the Right Treatment

Whitening is not the answer for every discoloured tooth, and knowing that beforehand is considerably better than discovering it afterwards. These are the situations where we will tell you so.

You have crowns, veneers, bridges or composite fillings at the front. These do not lighten. Whitening the natural teeth around them makes the mismatch more obvious, not less. Where this is the case, replacing the restoration to match or looking at veneers is usually the better plan. The same applies to crowns and to existing fillings in the smile line.
The discolouration is inside the tooth rather than on it. Intrinsic stain from an old injury, from tetracycline exposure or from a tooth that has had root canal treatment sits within the dentine rather than on the enamel. External whitening has little effect on it. Internal whitening, a veneer or a crown are the options we would discuss instead.
There is untreated decay, gum disease or a cracked tooth. These are treated first. Whitening over them is uncomfortable, and it does not fix anything.
You are pregnant or breastfeeding. Whitening is generally deferred, and we will talk through timing at your appointment.
You are under 18. We assess this case on a case-by-case basis rather than treating it as routine.
You already have sensitive teeth. This is usually managed rather than a reason not to treat. We may use a desensitising course beforehand, shorten the wear time, or space the applications out.

Why Have Teeth Whitening Done by a Dentist

The substantive difference between dental whitening at a practice and whitening at a beauty or whitening studio is not the light or the chair. It is the gel concentration and the examination that occur before it is used.

Gel strength is regulated. Whitening gel is hydrogen peroxide, or carbamide peroxide, which breaks down into it. Above the Poisons Standard’s over-the-counter concentration, it may only be supplied or used by a registered dental practitioner.
Your teeth are examined first. A dentist checks for decay, cracks, gum disease and exposed root surfaces before any gel is applied. That examination is what prevents most of the problems people associate with dentist whitening.
Your gums are protected. Isolating the gums and lips before application is a clinical step, not a comfort measure.
Somebody tells you the truth about your fillings. A composite filling in a front tooth will not change colour with the rest of the teeth, and you should hear that before treatment rather than after.
